History

Porters Fuchsias has been supplying a range of high quality pot and bedding plants since its formation in 1985.

John Porter, a retired fireman, started growing fuchsias in his back garden (subsequently buying most of the gardens in his street to accommodate for his multi-award winning collection) and put the idea to his two brothers that there could be scope for a business within his hobby.

Robin was a Maths Teacher and Horace (Orry) a businessman; between them, they combined talents to form quite a formidable team. Shortly after, John’s son Alan joined the ranks and the business quickly gathered pace.

Whilst we built our name on fuchsias, our experience extends to a whole host of plants which we supply throughout the year to Garden Centres and other Nurseries. The business has evolved with the needs of the industry over the years – a previous winner of the prestigious ‘Bedding Plant Grower of the Year’ award, our current nursery is based on a 6 acre site comprising 5 acres of modern glass with thermal screens, container benching and boom irrigation.

John and Robin have now both retired and Orry takes a more ‘silent partner’ approach, leaving Alan and his two children, Nick and Nat, at the head of operations.

Through the good times and the bad, the family has pulled together and in 2016 we created Happy Plants™ – a new garden centre brand with an emphasis on optimising the quality, presentation and long term performance of our stock.

Within twelve months of reaching the market, the brand was awarded Horticulture Week’s Consumer Marketing Campaign of the Year, beating some stiff competition to claim the title at the prestigious  UK Grower Awards in Covent Garden. On the same night, Nat was also announced as Top Sales and Marketing Professional, making the Porters’ team one of very few companies to scoop two awards.

We are really impressed with both the quality and service from Porters , their plants and planters sell really well, especially the new happy plant basket range
